HVFC Responds: Mutual Aid Assists with Truck Accident Route 9 South

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Information Officer

(September 20, 2022) —A patient was transported to Hartford Hospital via Life Star on September 20, 2022 following a motor vehicle accident on Route 9 South between exits 9 and 10.

At 1:00 p.m., Haddam Volunteer Fire Company, along with mutual aid from Middletown South District and Middletown Rescue 1, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, crews found a dump truck down an embankment with the operator pinned inside the vehicle against a tree.

Crews stabilized the vehicle, and made preliminary attempts to extricate the patient, however, the tree was blocking access to the vehicle. Officers then called for a heavy-duty rotating wrecker to help free the vehicle from the tree. Once the vehicle was more easily-accessible, extrication resumed for more than an hour and crews from Middletown hauled the patient out of the embankment using a ropes-and-pulleys system.

Once the patient was extricated, he was treated by EMTs and paramedics from Haddam Ambulance, Middlesex Health, and Life Star before being transported to Hartford Hospital with moderate injuries.
