HVFC Members Participate in “Live Burn” Exercise at Guilford FD New Training Facility

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Information Officer.

(April 25, 2023)—Members of Haddam Volunteer Fire Company participated in a “live burn” exercise this morning (April 22) at Guilford Fire Department’s new training facility.

Haddam Deputy Chief Jed Morrissey, who works as a fulltime firefighter for Guilford, coordinated the drill. Donning full PPE and SCBA, members first went into the facility’s fire behavior area where they watched a fire grow from an incipient state to a fully involved fire. This section of the training facility teaches firefighters how to recognize extreme fire behavior and avoid injuries or death.

Members then worked in teams to advance a hose line up the stairs and down a hall to where they encountered and extinguished a fire.

All volunteer firefighters are required to partake in a live burn exercise annually to maintain interior-firefighter status.

“We’re fortunate to have such a state-of-the-art training facility in Guilford, and we’re more than happy to allow our fellow firefighters in Haddam utilize the building for their own skill development,” DC Morrissey said. “Ultimately, all firefighters have the same goal and that is to protect our community. With this training center, we can ensure our firefighters are fully prepared to handle any emergency situation we may face.”Haddam Volunteer Fire Company would like to thank Guilford Fire Department for allowing us to use your training building.
