Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a motor vehicle accident at 5:45 p.m. Sept. 27, 2019 on Killingworth Road near Three Oaks Plaza and the Route 9S on-ramp.
A vehicle heading northbound and vehicle traveling southbound collided on Killingworth Road. The accident caused the southbound vehicle to veer to the right, strike a utility pole, cross a guard rail and ignite. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fully-involved vehicle fire.
The drivers of both vehicles were able to self-extricate. They were evaluated and transported to Middlesex Hospital by Haddam Volunteer Ambulance Service, Inc. and Deep River Ambulance. A third vehicle had abruptly stopped to avoid entanglement in downed power lines in the northbound lane. That driver removed herself and her dog from the vehicle.
The scene was secured by Eversource CT before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.
Killingworth Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid and helped block a portion of Route 81 at Little City Road.
At 5:40 a.m. today, HVFC and Eversource were called back to the scene for a utility pole fire.
A section of Killingworth Road remains closed today as Eversource is working to repair broken utility poles and downed power lines.
Power may be affected for area residents and businesses.
This type of accident shows how important mutual aide is to our communities.
