 PEE WEE SOCCER

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Indoor Soccer for boys and girls ages 3 – 4.  The program is being held on Wednesdays, 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. at Haddam Elementary School Gym from January 16 – February 13, 2019, March 6 – April 3, 2019 or May 1 – May 29, 2019.  The fee is $65 each session. Non-residents may register for an additional $10.  Pre-schoolers will learn the basic fundamentals of soccer with some fun drills, skills, and small-sided game. Please wear sneakers and shinguards. Conducted by UK International Soccer Camps.

NATURE CLASS EXPERIENCE

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a New Program this winter. Nature Class Experience will take your children through fun educational experiences with animals. January 16, 2019 will feature Furbearers, February 6, 2019 will feature Squirrels and March 13, 2019 will feature Spring Rains.  The presentation is hands-on, interactive, educational and entertaining.  The program is for boys and girls ages 1-4 years old and meets from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the HK Central Office A-117.  The fee is $22 each / $17 2nd child (non-residents add $5).

MESSY MONDAYS

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a program for children ages 18 mos– 4 years old this winter. This program offers the opportunity to meet other parents and toddlers in a playgroup atmosphere. Your child will have fun getting messy. Experiment with different textural materials such as shaving cream, goop, finger paints, play-dough, and more! Parents – leave the mess to us. This is a great social experience for both you and your toddler. The program meets Mondays at the HK Central Office A-117 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. from January 28– March 11, 2019 (No 2/18). A second session will run from April 1 – May 13, 2019 (No 4/15).  The fee is $50 / $35 siblings each session. (non-residents add $10).

YOUNG CHEFS of HK

The HK Recreation Department is offering some fun cooking classes this winter. Young Chefs is for boys and girls in grades 1 – 5.  It meets from 4:15 – 5:45 p.m. at the HKHS B-112. The fee is $26 each class (non-residents add $10).  It is a unique culinary experience which will offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Each visit will be a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, “Mise en Place” which, in the cooking world, translates into “Everything in its place.” Young chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, and so much more! At the end of each workshop the young chef will leave with a packet of info on how to recreate what we made in class and tasty treats for their family to try. Workshops include:

  • February 6, 2019:  Make chocolate covered apples!
  • March 6, 2019:  Make Shamrock pretzels!
  • April 3, 2019:  homemade Ravioli & English Muffin Pizza!
  • May 2, 2019:  Make homemade Pizza!
  • June 6, 2019:  Baked chicken nuggets yummy fruit smoothies.

CREATIVE ART

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Creative Art classes this winter. Children in grades K – 4 will explore a world of creativity through a variety of different projects from wood crafts to paper art projects. Each session will also have a day of cookie decorating! Class will meet on Mondays from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. at Killingworth Elementary School from January 7 – February 4, 2019 (No 1/21) as well as March 11 – April 1, 2019 and April 29 – May 20, 2019. The class will meet on Tuesdays at Haddam Elementary from January 8 – February 5, 2019 (No 1/22) as well as March 12 – April 2,2019 and April 30 – May 21, 2019.   There will be class at Burr Elementary School on Wednesdays, January 9– February 13, 2019 (No 1/23 or 2/6) as well as March 6 – April 3, 2019 (No 3/13) and May 1 – May 29,2019 (No 5/8).  The fee is $50 per each four-week session (non-residents add $10). Kids should bring a smock or shirt that can get messy.

KARATE KIDS

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Karate for boys and girls ages 5 – 12.  A session will be held at Haddam Elementary School Gym on Mondays from January 14 – May 20, 2019 (No 1/21, 2/18, 4/15) and on Wednesdays at Killingworth Elementary School Gym from January 16 – May 8, 2019 (No 4/17).  The classes meet from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.  The fee is $96.  Non-residents can sign up for an additional $10. Demo classes will be offered on January 7 at HES and January 9 at KES.  Please email Josselyn at josselyn@hkrec.com to reserve a spot in the Demo Class.

Children will be introduced to Washin-Ryu Karate-Do, a unique form of traditional Japanese Karate; and will learn the meaning of self-respect, respect for others, self-discipline, and concentration.  Mr. Moan will also talk to the kids about safety awareness and how to avoid abductions. The instructors are Mike Moan, an 8th Degree Black Belt, Mr. Piala, 3rd Degree Brown Belt and Mr. Veronic, 5th Degree Black Belt.

BABYSITTER’S TRAINING COURSE

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross Babysitting Course. Class will meet Thursdays, January 31, February 7 & 14, 2019 and Wednesdays, March 27, April 3 & 10, 2019 from 5:45 – 8:00 p.m. Both will be held in the HKHS Lower Media Center.  The fee is $75 and includes a Red Cross Babysitting Manual and Certificate. Non-residents please add $10.

There will be a CPR for Babysitters session on Monday and Wednesday, March 11 & 13 from 5:45 – 7:45 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media Center. The fee is $55 (non-residents add $10).  Must have taken the Babysitter’s Training class in order to take the CPR section.

The course is for students ages 10 – 15, and is designed to prepare them for babysitting.

This American Red Cross Program has been updated to include Basic Child Care, First Aid for breathing and bleeding emergencies, and injury prevention as well as covering other important topics to prepare young adults for babysitting. Students will not become certified in CPR or 1st Aid, but will gain knowledge. This class is an excellent opportunity to help students build self-confidence as well as job leadership, and decision-making skills.

ZUMBA

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Zumba this winter! Session I will be held on Mondays in the HKHS Cafeteria, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. from January 7– February 25, 2019 (No 1/21, 2/18). There will be a second session from March 25 – May 6, 2019 (No 4/15). The fee is $39 each session. Non-residents can register for an additional $10.  Participants can drop-in to a class for $10.

Zumba is Latin inspired dance/fitness craze sweeping the world. Fusing hypnotic Latin and other international rhythms with easy-to-follow moves, Zumba is a one-of-a-kind dance fitness class designed to burn calories and get your energy pumping. There are no complicated moves to learn and you don’t need the coordination of a pro. Zumba is not only great for the body, but is also great for the mind.  It’s a “feel happy” workout.  Stretching, abs and toning will also be added. Join the party!

ZUMBA KIDS

The Zumba Kids program is the ultimate dance-fitness party for young Zumba fans where they can play it loud and rock with friends to their own rules! This program features age appropriate music and moves that will get kids movin’ to the beat. Session 1 will run January 11 – February 15, 2019 at Burr Elementary School. A second session will be offered at Killingworth Elementary School January 24 – February 28, 2019 and Session 3, March 28 – May 9, 2019 (No 4/18) at Haddam Elementary School. The fee is $60 each session (non-residents add $10) and meets from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

SKYHAWKS BASKETBALLk (Gr. K-1)

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering an Introductory Basketball for kids in Gr. K and 1 this winter. Skyhawks basketball breaks down this exhilarating sport into fundamental skills that all athletes, no matter their skill level, need to succeed. Coaches will lead the athletes through fun games and exercises, focusing on ball handling, passing, shooting and defense. There is no pressure — just lots of fun while these young athletes participate through unique Skyhawks games. Our coaching staff is trained to meet the specific needs of young children and is committed to helping them start off on the right foot as they venture into athletics. This program will be held on Tuesdays, January 8 – February 12 (no 1/22) from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. (K) and from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (Gr. 1) at Burr Elementary School Gym. There will be a second session at Burr Elementary School on Thursdays, January 10 – February 7 from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. (Gr. 1) and from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (K). There will be a third session on Thursday, February 28 – March 28 from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. (Gr. 1) and from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (K) at Burr Elementary School. The fee is $70 (non-residents add $10).

2ND GRADE BASKETBALL

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering 2nd Grade Basketball on Saturdays, January 19 – March 2, 2019 (No class 2/16) from 10:30 – 12:00 p.m. at the Killingworth Elementary School gym.  The fee is $70. Non-residents may register for an additional $10. This is an instructional program to teach 2nd grade boys and girls the fundamentals of basketball.  Skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, & defense will be taught. This is a great way for young players to prepare for the youth league.

INDOOR SOCCER

ROBOT EXPLORERS

Come build your very own robot featuring eyes, tracks and a rotating body. This robot can become a smaller or a larger robot. Build your very own squad of explorers and battle your friends. Session 1 will be held Tuesdays January 22 – February 26 (no 2/19) at Killingworth Elementary School and Session 2 will be held on Thursdays January 24 – February 21 at Haddam Elementary School. Both sessions will run from 3:30 – 5:15 p.m. (1:05-3:30 PM on 1/22). The fee is $103 each session and non-residents may register for an additional $10. Please bring a snack.

ICE FISHING

The Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) Program will introduce you and your family to the sport of ice fishing. State Certified Instructors will teach you everything you need to know about getting started. You’ll learn all about the sport as well as safety, equipment, proper clothing to wear, fish identification, and winter pond ecology. The class will be held on Sunday, January 27 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (Classroom) 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. (Fishing if safe conditions) at the Care Center, 364 Rt. 80, Killingworth across from Chatfield Hollow State Park. The fee is $10 (non-residents add $5). Fee is for administrative services.

WHEN I’M IN CHARGE

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross “When I’m in Charge” class this winter/spring. Class will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 a second session will be offered Thursday, April 4 from 5:45 – 7:45 p.m. at the HKHS Lower Media Center.  The fee is $26. Non-residents please add $5.  The course is for students ages 9 and up, and is designed to teach kids how to be responsible when at home. Topics include internet safety, gun safety, family communications, sibling care, basic emergency care & confidence building.

WRESTLING & BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this Winter. This program is for boys and girls in grades 5 and up. Wrestling will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 – 6:15 pm and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 – 7:15 p.m. at the HK Middle School (Small Court) from January 8 – February 14 the fee is $90 each class or $120 for both classes (non-resident add $10). There will be a second session March 5 – May 30, 2019 (No 4/16 or 4/18). The fee for session 2 is $180 for each class or $240 for both classes (non-residents add $10). Wrestling – Learn the skills and develop the mental and physical toughness you need to excel your wrestling game. All practices will have a component of learning and drilling techniques to become a smarter and more technical wrestler. Athletes will finish with live wrestling and high-paced drills to get the mind and body tough for upcoming matches. This is a great opportunity for local wrestlers to meet and practice under high school coaches. Also a great opportunity for new wrestlers to try it out without committing to an entire season.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- This class is a grappling-based martial art that is fun in sport but also very useful in the act of self defense. Participants will work hands-on with fellow members to learn a variety of techniques from submission holds to take downs. Every class will have a component of learning and drilling techniques, as well as live training where members can practice freely. Jiu Jitsu is physically challenging but is also accommodating to all fitness levels and is great for the mind and body. Whether you are new to Jiu Jitsu or have trained for years, have no sport experience or are in the best shape of your life, this program is for you.

SWIM LESSONS (Children and Adult)

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Swim lessons this winter for children and adults. Classes are conducted at the HK High School Pool. Lessons meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Session 1 is from January 17– February 12, 2019 Children’s Swim Lessons (ages 4 and up) is from 7:00 – 7:40 p.m. and Adult Semi-Private Swim Lessons are from 7:50 – 8:30 p.m. The fee is $74/ $58 with pool membership / and $84 for non-residents each session.  $5 Sibling discount for the second child.

FENCING

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering fencing this winter. Class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 15 – March 5 (No 2/19) at the Middle School from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The fee is $135 (non-residents add $10).

With a rich tradition dating back hundreds of years, fencing is an Olympic sport that helps develop both large and fine motor skills. It encourages strategic thinking as well as physical development. Using the foil as the introductory weapon, students will learn proper technique for basic footwork and handwork as well as simple attack, and defense techniques. Students will learn through a combination of personal and group instruction, as well as partner drills. Equipment will be supplied with an emphasis will be on the proper and responsible use of weapons and protective gear. There will also be an introduction to electrical scoring equipment. Participants should wear a good pair of sneakers, t-shirt and long sweatpants.

CROSSROADS DRIVING SCHOOL

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation is offering a Driver’s Ed program this winter. Participants must be 16 years old before the start of the first class. Option 1 is a Full Program that includes 30 hours of classroom as well as the safe driving and alcohol program along with 8 hours of behind-the-wheel. The fee is $565 (non-residents add $10). Option 2 is a Classroom only option, where participants can take the 30 hours of class, but no driving. Includes the Safe Driving portion. The fee is $290 (non-residents add $10). Option 3 is the Safe Driving and Drug and Alcohol Program, which is the 8 hour course that fulfills the requirement of the State of CT for license applicants who took a Home Training Program. This course is required for all drivers, including those who are over the age of 18. The fee for this course is $150.

Classes will be held at the HK Old MS A-119. Session 1a will meet on Mondays & Wednesdays January 9 – March 18 (No 1/21, 1/23, 2/6, 2/18, 3/4 and 3/13) (plus 1/7 – Parent/Student Class, 6:00 pm in the HKHS Seminar room) from 2:45-4:45 pm. Session 1b will meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays January 8 – February 26 (No 2/19) (plus 1/7 – Parent/Student Class, 6:00 pm in the HK HS Seminar room) from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Session 2a will meet on Mondays & Wednesdays April 3 – June 3 (No 4/15, 4/17) (plus 4/1 – Parent/Student Class, 6:00 pm in the HK HS Seminar room) from 2:45-4:45 pm. Session 2b will meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays April 2 – May 23 (No 4/16, 4/18) (plus 4/1 – Parent/Student Class, 6:00 p.m. in the HKHS Seminar room) from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

There will be a Safe Driving Program on January 8, 10, 15 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. or January 9, 14, 16 from 2:45 – 4:45 p.m. (plus parent/student orientation on 1/7 from 6:00– 8:00 pm), a second session will be offered April 2, 4, 9 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. or April 3, 8, 10 from 2:45 – 4:45 p.m. (plus parent/student orientation on 4/1 from 6:00– 8:00 p.m.) The Parent/Student Orientation is mandatory for both student and parent and will be held in the HK HS Seminar Room.

SCIENCE OUTREACH

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department has the Children’s Museum of SE CT coming to HK. These programs are a mix of science demonstration and hands-on activities for boys and girls ages 3- 5 and boys and girls in grades K-4.  The fee is $22 each session. There is also a fee of $18 if you sign up for 2 or more classes. The topics include: Magnets – Explore the properties of magnets! Learn about magnetic fields, polarities, and the concepts of attraction and repulsion through fun experiments and games. Build an endless variety of shapes and structures using Playmag Magnetic Building Blocks, and even create a magnetic painting to take home!

This workshop will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at the HK Central Office room A-117 from 1:15 – 2:00 p.m. for boys and girls ages 3 – 5. There will also be a workshop for Boys and Girls in grades K-4, Wednesday, January 30 at Haddam Elementary School and on Thursday, January 31 at Killingworth Elementary School from 3:30 – 4:15 p.m.

FITNESS YOGA

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Fitness Yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 8 – May 30, 2019 (No 2/19, 3/7, 4/16, 4/18, 5/7, 5/9) from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. at the HKHS cafeteria. Journey through a 75 minute mind/body class. Discover the strength and cardiovascular benefits of this power yoga class and enjoy the relaxation as you reduce stress. Gain flexibility and balance through a flow of yoga poses. This is a great class for all levels including advanced, intermediate and beginners.  The fees are $198 for a 36 coupon book, $121 for an 18 coupon book, and $10 for one coupon. Coupons must be turned in at each class attended and are non-transferable. Participants need to bring their own yoga mat to class.

INDOOR PICKLEBALL (55+)

Indoor Pickleball is back by popular demand. Indoor Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The game (most similar to tennis) has 4 players on a court 1/3 the size of a tennis court. Solid paddles made of composite materials that are used to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net. Have fun playing while exercising your mind & body. Equipment provided or bring your own paddle. Session 1 will meet on Wednesdays January 9 –February 20, 2019 and Session 2 will meet March 20 – May 8 from 6:15 – 8:15 p.m. at the Killingworth Elementary School All Purpose Room. The fee is $15 and non-residents can register for an additional $5.

“COME PLAY IN THE MUD” POTTERY

In this adult level introduction to pottery class, learn simple hand building techniques, allowing you to express yourself by making a wide variety of pottery forms. The first 4 classes will focus on construction techniques and creation of forms. On week 5 you will be glazing your work, and week 6 will bring us a critique of your finished projects and celebration.

The program will meet on Thursdays, January 10 – February 14 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Haddam-Killingworth High School. There will be a second session March 7 – April 11. The fee is $165 each session  (non-residents add $10).

ADULT PAINT NIGHT

Get Creative! Gather your spouse, friends and put a unique spin on a night out. Relax, enjoy light refreshments and get creative, as our professional artist takes you brushstroke by brushstroke to create a one of a kind masterpiece. All materials included, no experience necessary. The program will meet Friday, January 11 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Haddam-Killingworth High School Cafeteria.  The fee is $40. Non-residents please add $10

AQUA AEROBICS

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Aqua Aerobics at the HK High School Pool. Aqua Aerobics is a great cardio-vascular workout for all ages, all fitness levels, swimmers & non-swimmers. No equipment is required. This free-style class includes a variety of styles including kickboxing, water walking, strength training, & more. Noodles, kickboards, and hand bouys are used for a total body workout.

A Mini-Class will be held January 14, 16 and 23 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. All three classes will be $21, $16 for two or $10 drop in.  Session I will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from February 11 – March 25 (No 2/18). There will be a second session from April 8 – May 22 (No 4/15 or 4/17). The fee is $72/$60 with a new pool membership and Sr. Citizens each session.  Register once a week for $42/$36. Drop-in for $10 each class.

UCONN WOMEN VS USF

Come out and support your favorite female basketball players. Enjoy a game between the UConn Huskies as they take on USF Women’s Bulls at Gampel Pavilion. Game time is 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2019. The fee $67 per person.  Fee includes Deluxe Motorcoach Transportation, admission to the games, & driver’s gratuity.

HK Recreation Dept.’s After School Child Care Programs

The HK Recreation Department’s State Licensed After School Programs are available on a full-time or part-time basis, including minimum days of school at Haddam, Burr and Killingworth Elementary Schools.  We are very accommodating and we even have sibling discounts.  Recreation Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

The benefits your child may experience by joining the After School program are:
