(May 17, 2023) — As the saying goes, “you win some and you lose some,” but in this case, you win some and some are just taken from you!
In an unprecedented turn of events on Tuesday, May 14, 2023, the Haddam Killingworth Girls Lacrosse team lost to the Morgan Huskies in overtime, with a rash of collected penalties consistently called on the home team, resulting in HK having to proceed down two players on the field.
The game was a symphony of whistles and calls against HK, as cards were handed out and possession was overturned. Going into the half, HK was down five points (6-1 Morgan lead). However, as we know, we are a second half team and the Cougars came out committed to play a different game, protecting themselves from the calls of the first half.
The passes were long, and the defense was careful and within the second half HK tied the score with 43 seconds left in the game, as Junior Aly Campbell ran in to score the tying goal. And now, here is where the scene takes a dramatic turn.
With less than a minute left to play, penalties were tallied and cards played, leaving HK to field the next few minutes with two fewer players than Morgan. Playing down two sticks is nearly impossible, but these girls did not quit and had a clear chance, but one more whistle was blown giving Morgan an easy penalty shot on goal for the win.
Goals were scored by Senior Captains Sophie Ramino 1, Jenna Whitmer 1, Juniors Jamie DiNapoli 2, Aly Campbell 1 and Sophomore Ava Ramino 1.This was a great lesson in fair play. Way to keep your head up, girls, despite the inequity!
