(December 16, 2023) — In recent months, Haddam residents have been debating a proposal to change the name of Injun Hollow Road in Haddam Neck.
Those who support the proposal have articulated a clear reason for their stance, citing the insensitivity of the term “Injun.” This feeling was shared by many online, in writing, and in person.
Those opposed to the name change have presented various different arguments. One such argument is that the road name is not actually offensive, but an important part of our town’s heritage and historic inclusivity of Native Americans.
One Native American shared that he thinks it connects him to his heritage. In addition to the sensitivity aspect of the name change, many have pointed out the potential hassle it would entail for residents and the town. This includes updating public records, maps, official documents, emergency service databases, and more.
Ultimately, residents of Haddam voted on the issue at the Haddam Neck Fire Department on December 12, 2023. Those in favor of the proposal: 31. Those opposed: 70. The paper vote was confirmed with a recount. With that, Injun Hollow Road in Haddam Neck remains Injun Hollow Road.
