Haddam Senior Picnic A Great Success

Submitted by Haddam Committee on Aging

(July 14, 2023) — On Monday, June 19, 2023 the seniors of Haddam were treated to their annual picnic. This year it was held at St. James Episcopal Hall due to work on the East Haddam Bridge.  Father Jim, the pastor of St. James, welcomed the seniors and  joined in the merriment.

Eighty-three seniors enjoyed wonderful picnic fare catered by Cyr BBQ from Middlefield.  After having their fill of hot dogs, hamburgers and salad, the meal was topped off with cake. While the seniors were visiting and enjoying themselves, Jon Condie entertained the group with music. Jon is always a favorite at the picnic.

Prior to the meal, Linda Talbott and Teresa Resnick spoke on behalf of the Haddam Sustainability Committee. The point is to remove items from ending up in the landfill. Haddam taxpayers save because of the reduced the cost of removing the trash.

For textile collection, Haddam residents can now drop off towels, comforters, torn clothes (NOT DIRTY), sheets, blankets, etc. There are drop off sites at the Transfer Station, the Jail Hill Annex, the HK Recreation Department and at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School. For the second year, leftover food was given to the Sustainability Committee to be recycled as part of its Food Scrap collection program, also at the Transfer Station.

Teresa gave three valuable hints: get a reusable water bottle instead of buying and tossing out individual plastic bottles; get a travel coffee mug so there is nothing to toss out; and bring your own plastic container when dining out as a doggy bag. Savings to the restaurant and to the landfill, and it’s reusable!

The Committee on Aging will hold its Senior Picnic next year on June 17, 2024 at a site to be determined.  See you there!
