Haddam & Killingworth Libraries Prepare for “Take Your Child to the Library Day”: February 1, 2020

By Meghan Peterson, Ph.D.

Haddam Brainerd Memorial Library and Killingworth Library are hosting special events for the international “Take Your Child to the Library Day” on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020.

It is all things dinosaur-uses, reptilian and amphibious at Brainerd Memorial Library on this unique day set aside to spotlight the role libraries can play in a child’s life. According to Marissa Lehmacher, Children’s Librarian at Brainerd Memorial Library, “the Children’s Department is having a “Dino Day” to celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day.” Lehmacher continues, “Join us at 11 a.m. for crafts, snacks, and some special songs and stories with Tuba Kelly! At noon, Riverside Reptiles will teach us about different reptiles and amphibians from around the world. You’ll even get a chance to touch them! You won’t want to miss this roarin’ good time!” And as Tom Piezzo, Director of BML says, “The Brainerd Library is happy to join with libraries around the globe to participate in 2020’s Take Your Child to the Library Day. We are always extra-proud to offer this special day of fun and learning, as the event started right here in Connecticut. And I would be remiss in if I didn’t say: every day is a great day to take your child to the library!”

At Killingworth Library, children and adults alike are invited to join their library community to enjoy the day. Gail Byrne, Children’s Librarian at Killingworth Library, calls on “all kids and kids at heart” to stop by on Saturday. In the official announcement, Byrne writes “you are invited to join us for a fun and yummy family event on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.” It is “Make and Take Chocolate Creations time during which you and ‘make and take’ some chocolate goodies with the help of Kim Larkin of Klassic Kreations. This is a fun, creative inter-generational family event. The program is free but space is limited. Register online at www.killingworthlibrary.org. or by calling 860 663-2000.” Laurie Prichard, Director of Killingworth Library, says “I love TYCL because it’s such a wonderful opportunity for us to provide programs for the entire family. We strive to a generate a sense of welcome and create positive memories for everyone who walks through our doors.”

For more information about TYCLD, visit ctlibrarians.org. In an explanation provided on the website, “Take Your Child to the Library Day (TYCLD) is an international initiative that encourages families everywhere to take their children to their local library. Launched in 2011 right here in Connecticut by librarians Nadine Lipman (Waterford Public Library, retired) and Caitlin Augusta (Stratford Library) with artist Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, TYCLD raises community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child, and promotes library services and programs for children and families.”
