For the past six years, Haddam Girl Scout troop #60772 has been collecting food for Thanksgiving for the Haddam Food Bank. Each of those years, they have received a minimum of eight dinners, according to Jennifer Tassmer, their leader. Haddam Social Services identifies the families in Haddam and Higganum who are in need of help at Thanksgiving time, the Girl Scouts collect the food, and the Haddam Food Bank distributes it to those families.
On Nov. 22, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Scouts will be at the Higganum Market collecting food for their 7th annual Thanksgiving Drive. People can drop food off, make monetary donations (which will be used to purchase food at the end of the Drive), or the Scouts will provide a shopping list so that people can purchase items at the Higganum Market.
The food they are hoping to collect:
- 12-18 lb. turkey
- stuffing
- potatoes
- sweet potatoes (fresh or canned)
- Veggies (green beans, carrots, corn – fresh or canned)
- cranberry sauce
- cream of mushroom soup
- fried onions
- gravy
- butter
- chicken broth
- cookie or brownie mix
- assorted pies
- rolls/crescent rolls
- sparkling wine
- hot chocolate
They can also take other non-perishable items to help stock the shelves in the food pantry.
Stop by on Nov. 22 and help the Girl Scouts help families in Haddam who might not otherwise have a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner.
“We have been able to collect eight full thanksgiving meals in the past,” said Ms. Tassmer. “There is a greater need then ever this year, we are hoping to exceed eight meals.”
