The Haddam Killingworth High School varsity football team defeated Stafford/East Windsor/Somers in the semi-finals of the Class S playoffs on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 with a final score of H-K 21, Stafford/East Windsor/Somers 14 in Overtime. They will advance to the finals on Saturday, Dec. 8, against Bloomfield at 10:00 a.m. Veteran’s Stadium in New Britain.
Zach Kauffman scored two touchdowns in regulation on runs of one yard each to put the Cougars up, 14-0, by the third quarter. The Bulldogs tied the game with the help of Tyler Ouellete’s passing (11 for 18, 113 yards), a score that stood at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Tobey Callender scored on a one-yard run and Jordan Callahan added the extra point to put the Cougars up by seven points. The Bulldogs were unable to score on their attempts in overtime, enabling H-K to reach a state football championship game for the first time since 1994 when the Cougars lost to Putnam, 20-14.
“I was always confident,” said senior captain and two-way lineman Aiden Maher. “We weren’t losing, we were never down, our coaches were never down.”
