Election 2024 Candidate Profile: Kathryn Russell

Editor’s Note: The candidates for State House and State Senate were given the opportunity to send HK-Now.com and Haddam Killingworth News a 450-word response to the question: “What do you bring to the table as a candidate, and what issues do you plan to focus on as a state legislator?” The statement below is from Republican State Representative Candidate Kathryn Russell, who is seeking election in the 36th Assembly District. The candidate’s reply is unchanged from the original as submitted. Dear Haddam Residents,

As Election Day nears, I want to reconnect and share why I am running as your Republican candidate for State Representative in the 36th District. My name is Kathryn Russell, and I believe Haddam deserves a representative who will fight for real solutions to make life more affordable, protect our community, and ensure your voice is heard in Hartford.

What I Bring to the Table

I bring over 30 years of business leadership experience, including roles in Fortune 100 companies, where I managed budgets of up to $60 million. With an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, I know how to manage resources efficiently, reduce waste, develop growth strategies, and deliver results. My experience balancing budgets and making tough financial decisions will be invaluable in Hartford as we address Connecticut’s financial challenges.

Presently, I serve as a Selectwoman in Deep River, where I work with residents to address local concerns. From overseeing town budgets to improving public safety, I understand how decisions at the local level impact daily life. I’ve always made it a priority to listen and act on what matters most to our community.

Priority Issues I Intend to Work On

Our towns are facing challenges that need real solutions. As your State Representative these are the key issues I will focus on:

  1. Making Life More Affordable: Connecticut has one of the highest costs of living. I will work to reduce taxes, lower energy costs, and cut unnecessary regulations so families and businesses can thrive. Government should make life easier, not harder.
  2. Supporting Local Businesses: With my business background, I know the importance of a strong local economy. I will work to reduce the red tape that holds small businesses back and create an environment where they can grow. When businesses thrive, so do job opportunities.
  3. Protecting Our Community: Public safety is a priority. I will ensure our police and first responders have the resources they need to keep our families safe. I’m proud to have been endorsed by the CT Fraternal Order of Police.
  4. Preserving Our Natural Resources: Haddam’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets. I will work to protect the environment and ensure sustainable growth that preserves our rivers, forests, and open spaces for future generations.

Why I’m Running

I’m running because I believe you deserve practical leadership that focuses on people—not partisan politics. I’m committed to real solutions that benefit all residents, regardless of party. Together, we can make Haddam and the 36th District a place where families thrive and businesses grow.

This November, I ask for your vote. Let’s bring fresh ideas, strong leadership, fiscal responsibility and real change to Hartford.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Russell
