Cross Country 2019: HKHS Competes at New Balance Shore Coaches Invitational in NJ

On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, the Haddam Killingworth High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams traveled to the historic Holmdel Park in New Jersey to compete at the New Balance Shore Coaches Invitational. The teams competed against over 120 schools from New Jersey. The Boys teams had another outstanding day as they dominated the JV “D” race and tied for 1st in the Varsity “D” race on the afternoon.

The Varsity boys scored 96 points to tie Voorhees, NJ in the team scoring and were led by junior Matt Jennings who placed 2nd in a time of 16:10 for the challenging 5,000 meter course.  He was followed across the line by senior tri-captain Christian Uzwiak who placed 10th in a time of 17:10, then junior Sean Rutledge 19th (17:33) , sophomore Caleb Freeman 26th (17:43) then sophomore  Tyler Robinson in his first ever varsity race placed 42nd (18:14) then junior Julian Spector 46th (18:16) and Fisher Harris 47th (18:16).

In the boys JV race, the Cougars dominated up front to score a low tally of 34 points to easy outdistance the field.  First to cross the line for H-K was senior Owen Howes who placed 5th overall in with a time of 18:35.  Then there was a pack of H-K runner all within 15 seconds of each other:  sophomore Andrew Hedges 6th (18:45), freshman Mason Gorham 8th (18:46), senior Nate Petras 9th (18:50), senior Michael Coleman 11th (18:55), junior Henry Sodergren 12th (18:59) and junior Greg Lynskey 13th (19:00).

The Girls Varsity team placed 7th overall in the Varsity “D” race, scoring 193 points. The Cougars were led by junior Meara Bodak and senior captain Julia Callis, who placed 27th and 30th overall in the race in times of 21:26 and 21:37 for the 3.1 mile course. They were followed by senior tri-captain Lauren D’Amico 29th (22:06), then sophomore Brianna Minervino 60th (22:46) and freshman Isabel Berardino 61st (22:47) to round out the scoring.

The cross country teams will next be in action on Thursday as they travel to Cromwell High School to compete at the Shoreline Conference Mega Meet.
