Courtney Statement on Confirmation of Dr. Miguel Cardona to Serve as U.S. Secretary of Education

Submitted by Patrick Cassidy.

(March 1, 2021) WASHINGTON, DC– Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), a senior member of the House Education and Labor Committee, made the following statement today after Dr. Miguel Cardona was confirmed by the Senate to serve as the 12th U.S. Secretary of Education under President Joe Biden. Dr. Cardona is a former classroom teacher from Connecticut, and previously served as the Connecticut Education Commissioner.

“Congratulations to Secretary Miguel Cardona—President Biden couldn’t have selected a better candidate to lead the Department of Education back to focusing on students, teachers, parents, and the success of our public schools,” said Rep. Courtney. “Dr. Cardona brings with him to the job twenty years of experience working in the classrooms of our public schools. As a former recipient of the statewide Principal of the Year Award in Connecticut, Dr. Cardona knows what it means to lead and inspire real teachers, students, and parents. He also knows personally what a good education and good teachers can do for young Americans—his own educational journey began in difficult circumstances, and he’s put in years of hard work and late nights to reach this milestone. As a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, I’m looking forward to working with Secretary Cardona and a Department that’s focused squarely on the success of students and teachers.”
