900 New Hires for Electric Boat in 2019

On Monday [1/14], I joined Electric Boat president Jeff Geiger and regional stakeholders at EB’s annual legislative update meeting, where they announced a projected 900 new hires for the upcoming year. EB already employs nearly 12,000 people in Connecticut, and their continued transformation towards a younger, more dynamic skilled labor force means they’ll continue to be a persistent and long-term driver of economic growth.

Just as impressive as EB’s job numbers are the statistics behind those numbers, which show a continued transformation of EB’s skilled labor towards a younger and more millennial workforce. In 2013 about 30% of EB employees were between the ages of 22 and 37. Today, just six years later, over 50% of EB employees are between the ages of 22 and 37. EB is providing these young adults with careers, not just short-term jobs, and this trend is the sort of change that augurs well for the region.

As Ranking Member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee in the previous Congress, I worked to ensure that our submarine programs and suppliers receive the support and funding they need to boost the shipyard’s growth, and fuel our economy. I’ll continue to make it a top priority in the 116th Congress.
