Courtney Appointed to U.S. Coast Guard Academy Board of Visitors Ahead of President Biden’s Commencement Address Tomorrow

By Patrick Cassidy.

Courtney will join President Biden in New London tomorrow for the Coast Guard Academy’s graduation ceremonies

(May 18, 2021) WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) made the following statement after being designated by Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Annual Board of Visitors for the 117th Congress. Courtney is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, and has represented the City of New London and the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Congress since 2007.

Tomorrow, Rep. Courtney will join President Joe Biden as he delivers the keynote address to U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s graduating class during graduation ceremonies in New London.

“The men and women of our U.S. Coast Guard perform important, often dangerous work all around the globe. The scope of their service would surprise most Americans—in New London, the cadets are training to support everything from public safety and our local maritime economies, to national security on our coastlines, to U.S. Navy operations in waters around the world,” said Congressman Courtney. “Their success begins in New London, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and in so many ways the men and women of the Coast Guard are proving every day that the Academy has prepared them not only to take on some of America’s biggest national security challenges, but also to succeed in life after service with top-flight, highly sought-after job skills. Eastern Connecticut is the proud home of so many of our nation’s veterans and active duty service members, and representing the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Congress is a special honor that I will always be grateful for. I am honored to be designated as a member of the bipartisan Board of Visitors for the Coast Guard Academy, and I’m looking forward to joining President Biden tomorrow as we celebrate and congratulate these hardworking young Americans on their achievements.”

Joining Rep. Courtney as designees from the U.S. House of Representatives are Reps. Nanette Barragan (D-CA-44), John Rutherford (R-FL-04), and Lisa McClain (R-MI-10). The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Annual Board of Visitors is established to review and make recommendations on the operation of the Academy. The Board is comprised of twelve members: the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation (or designee), the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (or designee), and a selection of Senators designated by the Vice President, Representatives designated by the Speaker of the House, and other individuals designated by the President. Click here to read more.
