Furoshiki, the Japanese art of wrapping objects

On Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 10:30 a.m., Elizabeth Van Ness will be teaching “Furoshiki,” the Japanese art of wrapping objects in cloth. This elegant and ecological art is used for both practical carrying of objects and for presentation of gifts. Participants will learn how to wrap items such as bottles, books and packages to offer as gifts. We will also make a shopping bag to carry on the shoulder and a double book wrap to carry books or binders. Participants do not need to bring materials. All materials will be provided. You only need to be able to fold and tie a basic overhand knot to participate.

“Osaki-san,” William Gillette’s Gentleman Valet

The new one act play on the life of Yukitaka Osaki, who was William Gillette’s Gentleman Valet, will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.

It was 1888 when Yukitaka Osaki and his older brother, Yukio, came to visit the US from Japan. Yukio went on to become a leader in Japanese politics, and would give Washington D.C. the famous “Cherry Trees.” Yukitaka, however, decided to stay. Discover the story of William Gillette’s valet who is also the elusive brother behind the famous politician Yukio. Yukitaka Osaki lived from the Victorian era through the turn of the century and both World Wars. Poignant and life affirming, here is what you will learn from Yukitaka about Victorian actor William Gillette, creator of the role of Sherlock Holmes.
