Letter to the Editor: In Support of LaMark Muir for State Representative (Baird)

High inflation, reduced federal support, and wars in the Middle East and Europe have created uncertainty and stress. We need a state representative who understands these challenges and can position Haddam and Connecticut for success and resilience.

Renee LaMark Muir brings experience in law enforcement, bipartisan oversight, and community service. She grew up in Ivoryton, attended Region 4 schools, and earned graduate degrees in law enforcement. She worked as a special investigator for the New York City Department of Investigation before returning to Connecticut to serve on a bipartisan committee overseeing legislative program reviews and investigations. In 2007, she joined the Hartford Police Department, first as a patrol officer and later as a detective. In Deep River, she also served on the Economic Development Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. Her record reflects a clear commitment to public service.

As a Haddam selectman, I have always found Renee responsive to our community’s needs. In her first term, she delivered important results for Haddam and for the state, including:

  • Authored legislation establishing a rapid-response protocol for aquatic invasive species, which passed the House and Senate with unanimous bipartisan support.
  • Helped secure grants for local farms in Haddam.
  • Helped secure a $730,841 funding increase for Haddam, along with an additional $32,588 Special Education Expansion and Development grant in 2025.
  • Helped secure a $1,942 Volunteer Fire Capacity Grant for Haddam in 2025.
  • Secured an additional $157,682 in Education Cost Sharing funding for Haddam.
  • Helped the town secure $864,760 in 2026 through the DOT Transportation Rural Improvement Program to build much-needed sidewalks in Higganum Center.
  • Played a key role in obtaining the HK High School waiver, allowing the town to preserve community assets—including the pool, field house, and auditorium—without losing state funding for the high school renovation.

For these reasons—and many more rooted in her character and record of community service—I am proud to support and endorse Renee LaMark Muir for State Representative. Don’t forget to vote on November 3rd!

Peter Baird, Haddam
