(January 27, 2026) — The Haddam Garden Club is happy to present “Hummingbirds, Jeweled Acrobats of the Garden” as our February program. Sally Brockett, birder, gardener and President of the Daytime Gardeners of North Haven will present tips on attracting these beautiful aerialists and she will share photos of hummers across the United States and Central America.
The audience will learn about hummingbird behaviors and how they survive despite their tiny size. Slow motion video will show how these birds can hover to feed, even on windy days.
Banding the tiny birds is one-way researchers learn more about them. See how the banding station works to obtain information without injuring the hummers. Learn how to make your own nectar and the specialty feeders that are the most efficient and easiest to manage. Learn how to use the migration maps to plan when to put out feeders in the spring. This can attract more hummers to your yard for the season.
Plan ahead to prepare your gardens with the favorite flowers birds seek. Join us for this interesting and informational program on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 12:30 p.m. at the Haddam Firehouse, 439 Saybrook Road in Higganum. $10 donation. We will be serving coffee, beverages and sweet treats.
