(August 1, 2025) — August is here and we have some fun things planned at the Haddam Senior Center in the month ahead. The Calendar and Menu can be found at the link below:

AUG 2025 Event Calendar Updated (1)

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Monday, August 4, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. – August Birthday Celebration! Whether you have a birthday in August or not, come celebrate your friends who do! I have to give a special shout out to Carol Liebman who makes our cakes each month for our birthday celebrations. She does an incredible job and we are all grateful for her delicious talent. Thank you, Carol! 😊
  • Monday, August 11, 2025 at 12:45 p.m. – We are excited to welcome State Representative Renee LaMark Muir, who is the representative for District 26 (Haddam, Chester, Deep River and Essex). Representative LaMark Muir will be here for a Q and A session. If there are specific topics you want her to touch on, please reach out to Doreen (seniors@haddam.org or 860-345-2480) and we will make sure she includes them in her session with us.
  • Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. – Sherry Carlson of CRAHD will be here for our monthly blood pressure screening. No sign-up is required.
  • Friday, August 15, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. – Mini Spa Manicures are back! Space is limited, so please call or stop by the Senior Center to sign up. The cost for the manicure is $20.
  • Monday, August 18, 2025 at 12:00 Noon – It’s our monthly Pizza and a Movie! This month we will be watching Calendar GirlsCalendar Girls, a 2003 British comedy  starring Dame Helen Mirren. It is based on a true story of a group of middle-aged women from Yorkshire, England who produced a nude calendar to raise money for Leukemia Research. It should be a fun movie, full of laughs! Please call, email or sign-up for this event to ensure we have enough pizza for everyone.
  • Friday, August 22, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. –  Cathy from Cathy & Co Botanicals is back for another floral arranging workshop! The cost for the workshop is $20 for Haddam seniors, and $25 for non-resident seniors. Sign-up is also required for this event.
  • Friday, August 22, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. – Cindy MacNeil Sola is back for more Medium Readings. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from our last session, so we are bringing her back this month. The cost is $35 for a 20 minute session. Please contact the Senior Center to sign up.

  • Monday, August 25, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. – We will kick off our new Mystery Book Club! If you love reading mysteries and are looking for a group that shares your passion, we’d love to have you join us! We will send out an email next week with the selection for the month. Contact the Senior Center to sign up and to let Doreen know your reading preference: book, e-book, large print, audio book, etc. We will make every effort to procure your preferred format each month.
  • Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. – It’s not technically the end of summer, but we will be celebrating the traditional end of summer with an ice cream social!

Regularly Scheduled Highlights in August:

  • Every Monday and Thursday –
    • Mahjong at 10:00 a.m. If you are interested in learning this engaging and fun game, please contact Doreen and we will get an introductory class on the schedule.
    • Mobility at 11:15 a.m. This is an all-abilities class that can be done at your comfort level! This class will help with mobility, balance, strength and coordination.
  • Every Tuesday –
    • 10:30 a.m. – Cards – Join us for a fun session of Setback
    • 12:30 p.m. – Cards – We’ve got a lively group who loves to play the game, Five Crowns
    • Both groups would love to have new friends to join in on the fun.
  • First and Third Thursday of the month –
    • BINGO!
      • Cost is $1.00 per card
  • Lunch – Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
    • We serve a delicious hot meal every day that we are open!
      • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, lunch is provided via The Kitchen at Futures, Inc. and is partially funded by the Older Americans Act Title III Grant program. The cost for these meals is a suggested donation of $3.00 unless otherwise noted. A current Form 5 is also required to participate in this program and can be accessed on the town website or by contacting the Senior Center.
      • Friday lunches are provided by our own River Valley Provisions in Tylerville.
      • As this is not part of the OAA Title III grant program, the cost for these meals is $5.00. If you are purchasing the meals on Friday, we ask that you either pay on Friday, or see Doreen if you are paying for the week.

As always, if there is something you wish to see or do at the Senior Center, please let me know! Please also post and share this information with your communities and friends.
