(July 7, 2025) — Congratulations to Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Junior Division Member Andrew Ferguson for recently completing the Introduction to the Fire Service (ITTFS) class at the Connecticut Fire Academy!

Andrew and 27 other cadets—ages 14-17—from departments around the state, graduated from the week-long ITTFS class #55 on June 28, 2025. While at the academy, the students participate in physical fitness training and learn how to stretch hose lines, raise ladders, use radio communication, and work in teams to extinguish a fire. At the end of the session, participants demonstrate the skills they have learned by responding to a simulated multi-story building fire for a live audience.

Andrew, 17, the son of Will Ferguson of Middletown and Angela Ferguson of Higganum, is the stepson of HVFC Deputy Chief Jed Morrissey of Higganum (Photo above, Jed Morrissey, left, with Andrew Ferguson, right). Andrew is a rising Senior at Haddam-Killingworth High School.

“The Connecticut Fire Academy greatly enhanced my understanding and general knowledge of the fire service, getting me a step closer in the right direction to potentially pursue firefighting as a career,” Andrew said. “The Academy also boosted my confidence and pushed me to be a stronger leader and work better in groups to accomplish a specific task.”
