(June 15, 2025) — On June 9, 2025 members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company gathered at Station One for a refresher course on ropes and knots, sharpening their skills in technical rescue operations.
Led by Firefighter Kyle Everett, the hands-on training focused on building pulley systems that provide mechanical advantage—crucial for safely lifting an injured person from steep or uneven terrain.
During the drill, firefighters practiced tying and securing a prusik loop, a key component in rope systems that allows controlled movement and gripping under tension. Each member took turns setting up and operating a pulley system, ensuring that they’re prepared to respond effectively should someone need to be hoisted from a slope or embankment.
“Haddam has many trails with uneven and hilly terrain, and hikers occasionally get hurt in areas that are hard to reach,” said Everett. “That’s why we run this refresher every year—so our members are confident and ready if they need to perform a rope rescue.” This type of training is part of the department’s ongoing effort to stay ready for a wide range of emergency situations.
