(October 28, 2026) — Haddam-Killingworth Youth and Family Services celebrated two successful community traditions this fall, bringing together families, local businesses, volunteers, and community organizations for the annual Fall Fest and Trunk or Treat, and the 33rd Annual Pumpkin Run.
Both events continue to build on years of tradition, with familiar faces returning alongside new families, volunteers, and community partners.
“One of the things I appreciate most about Haddam and Killingworth is how willing people are to get involved,” said Rachel Verinis, HKYFS Co-Director. “From families decorating trunks to businesses sponsoring the Pumpkin Run, there are so many people who contribute their time and resources. It’s something we’re really proud of, and it’s exciting to see these traditions continue to grow.”
A Creative Night at Trunk or Treat
An estimated 1,300 people attended Fall Fest and Trunk or Treat on October 17, 2026 at Haddam-Killingworth High School, where approximately forty decorated trunks provided a festive evening for local children and families. (Photo below: Shark Attack Trunk, Hunter Ruth and Family)

The creativity was impressive, with everything from spooky graveyards and playful characters to elaborate handmade displays. Amanda and Crystal’s “Crazy Old Cat Ladies” was a particular favorite among children, earning first place in the Kids’ Choice voting and second place for Most Creative. Melissa and Amy brought their own versions of haunted graveyards, while Sarah’s “CandyLand,” Alee’s “Paw Patrol,” and Lauren’s “Beach Bums” added colorful, imaginative touches to the evening.

The event also featured strong participation from local organizations and businesses. The Regional School District 17 Board of Education joined the festivities with a decorated trunk (photo above, left to right, Matt Riggs, Lisa Connelly, Tara Amatrudo, Heather Pach), alongside community participants representing local businesses, schools, and civic groups. Displays from organizations and families, including Haddam 250 and the creative “Okay to Feel the Feels” trunk, reflected the range of people who helped bring the event together.
Beyond the decorated trunks, the Carlson family’s Haunted House was a popular attraction, while the Haddam Democrats and Lions Club contributed food, popcorn, and lemonade to the evening.
With returning participants and new additions each year, Trunk or Treat continues to be a favorite fall event for families across both towns.
A Great Day for the 33rd Annual Pumpkin Run
The 33rd Annual Pumpkin Run Family Event and Fundraiser welcomed more than 360 registered runners and walkers, including participants in the Kids Fun Run, to Haddam-Killingworth High School. The beautiful fall weather provided a perfect setting for the event, which has grown to include activities for the whole family. (Photo below, Olivia Beaudet, Overall Run Winner)

Children enjoyed pumpkin painting, crafts, games, and face painting provided by the HKHS National Art Honor Society. Café Laurel provided food, the Madison School of Rock Band brought live music, and festive displays offered families opportunities for photos and fun throughout the day. Volunteers were an important part of the event’s success. HKYFS Board members, local adult volunteers, Girls on the Run Teen Mentors, HKHS Cross Country athletes, Ignite Club members, and other student volunteers helped with registration, activities, and along the racecourse. Team Girls on the Run participants also helped create handmade prizes for top finishers.
Now in its 33rd year, the Pumpkin Run remains an important fundraiser for HKYFS, supporting counseling, prevention, youth development, and family programs serving Haddam and Killingworth.
A Community Worth Celebrating
Sarah McMillan, a local resident, parent, and event sponsor through her role as a Realtor with Home Realty Advisors, shared:
“Events like Trunk or Treat and the Pumpkin Run are what make our small town so special. They bring together neighbors, friends, families, and local businesses to create memories that our children will carry with them for years to come. It’s not just about the events themselves, but about the sense of community, connection, and belonging they create. I’m so proud to be part of a town that continues to show up for one another.”
HKYFS extends its sincere gratitude to the many individuals, businesses, and organizations who contributed to both events. The agency is especially appreciative of its Board of Directors for their ongoing leadership and hands-on support, as well as the Towns of Haddam and Killingworth and RSD17 for their continued partnership and investment in local youth and families.
From longtime sponsors and volunteers to families participating for the first time, each person plays a role in carrying these traditions forward. HKYFS is grateful to those who established and sustained these events over the years, and to the next generation bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm.
Thank you to our Haddam and Killingworth communities for another wonderful fall season supporting HKYFS and one another.
