Tweens Magic: the Gathering – Fridays, October 2nd and 16th, 5:00pm-6:00pm. Magic is the world’s most popular trading card game, and it’s a great way to reinforce math, reading, and critical thinking skills, as well as face-to-face, screen-free play. We will be learning the game from the ground up, so all levels of experience are welcome, including absolute beginners. Participants will not be required to purchase anything or bring their own cards to play. Our materials have been generously donated by the MagiKids nonprofit, and participants will build decks that they get to take home and keep. This program is recommended for ages 9+. Please register in advance.
Library Renewal with Stephen Watson – Tuesday, October 6th, 2:00pm-3:00pm. We have carefully designed this Tai Chi class to promote balance, structural stability, and ease of mind. You can join us whether you’ve had no prior experience or perhaps practiced Tai Chi elsewhere. Each of our practices can be done seated or with the use of an assistive device! We’d like to welcome everyone to the wise world of soft health methods. In our classes, we’ll explore modern methods of balance restoration as we journey through the wonderful wisdom of Asia’s ancient traditions. Each class will offer gentle stretches, self-massage self-care routines, guided energy circulation practices, and a chance to play at the gentle movements famous for their power and poise. Join us in the spirit of play and take the tools home to play every day! Space is limited, so please register in advance.
Adult Movie Night – Wednesday, October 7th, 6:00pm-8:20pm. Join us for a free movie viewing! We meet in the adult reading area after the library closes at 6:00. Feel free to bring your own snacks and (covered, non-alcoholic) drinks. Second Monday Art Program – Monday, October 12th, 2:00pm-3:00pm. Adults are invited to dabble in creativity! Using leaves, wildflowers, acorns, and paint, we’ll print images on blank cards to send to friends and family. Perfect for Thanksgiving, Halloween, or just a seasonal greeting. Space and supplies are limited, so please register in advance.
Tuesday Trivia – Tuesday, October 13th, 6:00pm-7:00pm. Join us for our monthly adult trivia program! Teams will be competing for the title of Trivia Master and a gift certificate to the library book sale. We will be playing Jeopardy-style with five categories, and new topics every month. We have a limit of six teams, with up to four players each. This calendar event has six sign-up slots, so please make sure only one player from each team submits a registration; the rest of the team members can just show up.
Game Night: The Quiet Year – Tuesday, October 20th, 5:30pm-8:30pm. The Quiet Year is a game that’s described as “part roleplaying game, part cartographic poetry”. In this game, you and your group collaborate to draw a map and tell the story of a small community working to survive after the collapse of civilization. A deck of cards introduces omens, challenges, and opportunities that your community will face. There is no winning or losing; the point of the game is the story that the players tell together. Recommended for fans of tabletop games, cartography, post-apocalyptic fiction, or anyone creative and looking to try something new. This game can be played in groups of 2 – 4 people. We will introduce the game and provide instructions and materials; all you need to bring is your imagination. Both teen and adult groups are welcome to join us. The game takes a few hours to finish, so feel free to bring snacks and (non-alcoholic) drinks. Please register in advance.
The Life of James Garfield – Wednesday, October 21st, 5:00pm-6:00pm. Presented by Phil Devlin. If you’re like many of us, you may not know much about our 20th president; after all, he was assassinated after six months in office. Despite his short tenure, though, the story of his life and career was fascinating. Please join us to learn more! Phil Devlin is a retired HKHS history teacher and a frequent presenter here at the library. This event will be roughly an hour, with time for questions. Our space is limited, so please register to save your seat.
American Girl Doll Club – Thursday, October 22nd, 6:00pm-6:45pm. Join us with your favorite doll (it doesn’t have to be an American Girl doll) and make new friends! Enjoy a brief discussion, activities, and a craft from a historical time period. This month, we’ll focus on Josefina Montoya and life in the 1820s. Please register in advance, and contact the library if your child has any food allergies.
Tween D&D: Campaign Two – starts Saturday, October 24th, 9:00am-10:30am. This group is open to both experienced dungeon-delvers and complete beginners; no need to bring anything other than your imagination. Dungeon Master Leo will be leading the adventure for fellow kids 8 – 12 (with library supervision). This club will be broken into six-week campaigns, with the group meeting every Saturday. This campaign runs from October 24th to November 28th. Please register for each session that you can attend.

Stevens combines historical images and video with live music played on a variety of vintage instruments, some homemade. Please register in advance, space will be limited!
LEGO STEM Club – Tuesday, October 27th, 6:00pm-6:45pm. Calling all future engineers! Learn to use the STEM steps to success as you solve a problem, plan and create a design, and then test your project. This month’s project is a robot. Space is limited, so please register in advance.
