Summertime Fun at Brainerd Library

By Terry Twigg

(June 10, 2026) — Summer! Time for the beach, backyard barbecues, and fireworks.  And time for intriguing programs at the library, too.  Check out what’s coming up:

  • Today! Wednesday, June 10, 2026—An Adult Coloring Event. No registration required. Just drop in at 6:00 p.m.   And try to stay within the lines!
  • A “One Book Club.” This summer’s Adult Summer Reading  book is “Remarkable Creatures,” a true story about Mary Anning, an Englishwoman who explored fossils in the early nineteenth century, when paleontology was in its infancy. Imagine being one of the first people to recognize a dinosaur!   Everybody is invited to participate.  We provide the books, so stop in, sign up, and pick up a copy.  We’ll meet on July 29, 2026 to hear what you thought of it.  If there’s enough interest, we’ll follow up with a field trip to Dinosaur State Park—families and children welcome to come along!
  • Is something bugging you? The library and DEEP (Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) are joining forces on June 20, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. to present a program telling you everything you never knew you needed to know about insects.  With microscopes and cheat sheets—er, guidebooks—you’ll learn to identify some, and understand why they matter.  Bonus:  if you’ve ever wanted to meet hissing cockroaches, this is your chance!  Register online, or give us a call.
  • Are you a chicken person? Or a chicken person wannabe?  Then you’ll want to attend this upcoming program on chicken health and first aid.  UConn Poultry Scientist Indu Upahyaya will be at the library at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 to answer all your chicken health concerns.  Call us to register, or sign up online.
