Haddam Business Spotlight: Goodspeed Tattoo and Piercing

Submitted by Haddam Economic Development Commission

(April 13, 2026) — The Haddam Economic Development is excited to share with you the inspiring journey of Goodspeed Tattoo and Piercing, our latest Business Spotlight. Under the visionary leadership of George Smith and his dedicated team, this establishment has redefined the perception of tattoo shops in our community.

When you step into Goodspeed Tattoo and Piercing, you are greeted by a vibrant atmosphere filled with stunning artwork, antiques, and an area specially curated for children, complete with toys and games. It is a space where artistry meets warmth, inviting everyone to explore before they decide on their next tattoo or piercing.

George’s path to becoming a tattoo artist is a testament to the power of following one’s passion. Originally aspiring to be a mechanic, he stumbled upon tattooing almost by chance. With encouragement from a friend, and determination to master his craft, he honed his skills for more than fifteen years at A Second Skin Tattoo in Meriden. His journey led him to establish, along with his business partner, Goodspeed Tattoo and Piercing in Haddam in January 2015, with a clear vision of creating a clean and family-friendly environment. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Goodspeed Tattoo needed to find a new location and, after six years in the Tylerville section of Haddam, Goodspeed Tattoo moved to its current location at 310 Saybrook Road in Higganum Center.

Despite some initial pushback, George’s commitment to fostering a welcoming space has garnered immense support from the community. Today, Goodspeed Tattoo boasts a talented team of artists: Jeremy, who specializes in Realism; Brian, whose expertise lies in Traditional tattoos, alongside George’s mastery of Black & Gray and Lettering. Moreover, as the resident piercing specialist, George has become a beloved figure in the community, especially among families seeking a kind and professional environment for their children’s first ear piercing. More than 90% of their piercing clients are children, often from the same family.

George’s appreciation for his journey fuels his generosity. Goodspeed Tattoo actively supports local causes, including sponsorships to a Haddam Little League team, Pinewood Derby cars for the Cub Scouts, Project Graduation, Halloween Trunk or Treat, and other community events. As if that weren’t enough, each holiday season George embodies the spirit of giving by becoming Santa, collecting unwrapped toys to bring joy to children in need. Last year, his efforts resulted in seven bags of toys collected! For these efforts, on January 23, 2026, George received the Connecticut General Assembly’s Official Citation highlighting, in its words:

“A genuine desire to uplift others and respond to community needs with compassion and humility. Mr. Smith brings joy, hope and warmth to those he serves. His actions remind us that true service is rooted in sincerity, kindness and a commitment to making a difference.”

As we reflect on what Goodspeed Tattoo represents, their mission is beautifully encapsulated in their motto: “Enter as a Stranger, Leave as a Friend.” This sentiment speaks volumes about the genuine connections that George and his team forge with every client. Each interaction is not just a transaction. It is the beginning of a bond built on trust and understanding.

George holds dear a memorial shelf in his shop, honoring loved ones lost. This personal tribute reflects his legacy of kindness and artistry, which remains deeply ingrained in the community. It is heartwarming to see clients traveling from as far away as Florida, often returning to celebrate significant milestones with tattoo art that symbolizes their journeys.

When we spoke with George about his dreams for the future, he expressed a desire for semi-retirement in a tree house in New Hampshire, Yet, even in this vision, he plans to remain connected to his shop and the community.

In a world that often seeks to divide, Goodspeed Tattoo and Piercing stands as a beacon of creativity, community, compassion and joy. We invite you all to visit and experience the unique charm of this wonderful, fun, and eclectic establishment. Perhaps consider adding a piece of art to your own story.
