A “New Beginning” for the Kelly Allard Leach Scholarship

Submitted by Jessie Ford

(January 20, 2026) — The Killingworth Women’s Organization (KWO) is proud to announce a new scholarship fund in memory of longtime member Kelly Allard Leach, who passed away in February 2025. Kelly was an inspiring and kind person who was passionate about helping and improving her community. As an adult, she courageously went back to school to change her career path. In her memory, the KWO has created the New Beginnings scholarship to support adult learners as they take meaningful steps toward their educational and professional goals.

The New Beginnings scholarship will be awarded at least twice per year and is open to women or individuals who identify as women and live or work in Haddam, Higganum, or Killingworth. This scholarship is intended for adult learners who are:

  • Obtaining their General Educational Development degree (GED)
  • Pursuing a vocational or college degree
  • Completing a license or certification program in a new field

The New Beginnings scholarship may be used for a broad range of educational expenses, including tuition, fees, books, transportation, and childcare. The amount of the scholarship award is typically between $100 and $500 and is paid directly to the student.

The first application period for the New Beginnings scholarship is open now through February 28, 2026 with awards announced April 1, 2026. Applications received after March 1, 2026 will be considered in the next round of decisions later this year.
