Nathaniel B. Field Foundation Hosts Suicide Prevention Program at Vinal Tech

Submitted by Howie and Marie Field

(November 26, 2025) — The Nathaniel B. Field Memorial Foundation, Inc. sponsored international speaker and author John Halligan’s appearance for Vinal Technical High School students and staff in Middletown on November 24, 2025. John’s compelling presentation addressed the correlation between social media and mental health issues in youth and adolescents. John shared “Ryan’s Story,” an emotionally-charged and impactful presentation that highlights the destructive consequences of bullying and cyberbullying.

The “Ryan’s Story” presentation is based on the personal experience of Halligan, who tragically lost his son Ryan to suicide as a result of relentless bullying. Halligan shared the story to raise awareness, promote empathy, and empower students to take action to prevent bullying.

The suicide rate among middle and high-school-aged children has increased drastically since the introduction of the internet and smartphone, and cyberbullying has been a significant contributor to this alarming trend. John’s inspirational messages effectively address bullying, cyberbullying and suicide prevention across the nation. He stresses being an up-stander instead of a bystander, that students are loved beyond belief and that forgiveness can be very healing. Struggling students are encouraged to talk to a trusted adult, friend or family member to receive support and help.
