Swing Bridge Construction Update: Week of March 23, 2025; No Overnight Closures This Week

Submitted by Sara Mendillo

(March 23, 2025) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation has issued the following advisory for construction activity at the Haddam/East Haddam Swing Bridge (Route 82) for the upcoming week of March 23, 2025:

Overnight Bridge Closures

There are no overnight closures scheduled for this week. The next overnight closures are scheduled for the week of March 31, 2025.

Daytime Lane Closures

  • Single lane closures on Route 82 occur Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. within the project limits. Traffic flaggers will coordinate the alternating traffic sequence.
  • Both lanes will be reopened and operational during peak traffic hours.

Marine Advisory

Boaters are advised that the bridge is back to the normal USCG-required operating schedule.

Currently, openings are “on call.” Beginning May 1, 2025, the bridge will open hourly between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The bridge operator can be reached at 860-218-4973. Please be advised that this phone number is designated for marine use only.

Mariners are advised that the contractor’s suspended scaffold has been removed from spans 3 and 4. The contractor still has scaffolding hung in span 2.

The tide clearance board is recommended as the best reference for gauging clearance at time of passage. The board is located on the bulkhead at Goodspeed, and has been set to indicate the vertical clearance to the contractor’s suspended scaffold.
