(February 19, 2025) — Members of Haddam Volunteer Fire Company participated in an ice rescue drill on February 17, 2025 at the Higganum Reservoir. The annual refresher lets emergency responders practice “rescuing” a person who had fallen through the ice using a rapid transport sled, harness, and ropes.

(Photo above, Deputy Chief Jed Morrissey and Lt. Mike Mancuso cut a hole in the ice prior to the drill).
Donning dry and ice rescue gear, members took turns playing the role of a victim and the rescuer.

In a real scenario, emergency medical technicians would immediately treat the victim for potential hypothermia.
