Letter to the Editor: Tax Credits for Donations to Non-Profits Providing Scholarships

There is an interesting proposal to promote scholarships for children of low-income families who would otherwise not be able to avail themselves of educational opportunities.  This one is unique in that it would not use monies that might otherwise go to the school districts of Connecticut.  In other words, it would not reduce funding for any public schools.  It uses tax credits as incentives for individuals to donate to non-profits that would provide these scholarships.

HB 5101, proposed by State Rep. Holly Cheeseman, who represents the 57th Assembly District (East Lyme and parts of Salem and Montville), has as its statement of purpose: To establish a tax credit for donations made to non-profit entities that provide educational access and opportunity scholarships.

On Monday March 25, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., there will be a large display on the south lawn of the State Capitol in Hartford in support of this bill.  People who attend this event will have the opportunity to speak with legislators and encourage support for the legislation.
