(January 31, 2024)—Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a reported chimney fire without extension on Hickory Lane in Higganum at 6:10 p.m. Jan. 30. The homeowner used cardboard to light a fire in the woodstove, and some of the burning material was drafted to the top of the chimney where it remained on fire for several minutes until it self-extinguished. The homeowner used a dry chemical to extinguish the fire in the stove. Firefighters accessed the chimney from roof ladders to inspect the flu and found no more burning debris. HVFC officers advised the homeowner to have the chimney professionally inspected.
