Letter to the Editor: Injun Hollow Road Name Should Have Been Changed

Shame on those Haddam voters who voted to keep the name Injun Hill. The term “injun” is derogatory, pejorative and offensive to American Indians, perpetuating negative stereotypes, and it was used during a time when white superiority and segregation were commonplace. It is comparable to calling a street “N***** Hill” (insert the N word), which we wouldn’t do.  While there may be history in the usage in Haddam, we continue to insult the indigenous people in America.
I urge you to reconsider the use of this name, in spite of the additional time it might take to make the formal changes.
Thank you.
