2021 Household Hazardous Waste Collections & Paper Shredding Events

Events for the 10 towns of Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook (identification is required; there is no fee to participate)

  • May 15, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Essex HHW Facility, Route. 9, Exit 4, Dump Road, Essex
  • June 26, 2021 Paper Shredding* Essex HHW Facility, Route. 9, Exit 4, Dump Road, Essex
  • July 17, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Essex HHW Facility, Route. 9, Exit 4, Dump Road, Essex
  • September 18, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Essex HHW Facility, Route. 9, Exit 4, Dump Road, Essex
  • October 23, 2021 Paper Shredding* 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Essex HHW Facility, Route. 9, Exit 4, Dump Road, Essex
  • October 30, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Essex HHW Facility, Route. 9, Exit 4, Dump Road, Essex

Directions to HHW Facility, 11 Dump Road, Essex: From Route 9 North: Exit 4, Straight off exit ramp, cross over railroad tracks. Drive to the top of the hill. HHW facility is on the left (past CRRA/MIRA & Transfer Station. From Route 9 South: Exit 4, go left off exit ramp, turn right at light, cross over railroad tracks… HHW is on the left.

Events for the 16 towns of Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Middlefield, Middletown, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Portland, and Westbrook (identification is required; there is no fee to participate):

  • April 17, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Clinton Public Works Garage, 117 Nod Road, Clinton
  • May 22, 2021 Paper Shredding* 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Colchester-East Hampton Water Pollution Control Facility, 20 Gildersleeve Drive, East Hampton
  • June 19, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Colchester-East Hampton Water Pollution Control Facility, 20 Gildersleeve Drive, East Hampton
  • August 21, 2021 Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Woodside Intermediate School, 30 Woodside Road, Cromwell
  • September 11, 2021 Paper Shredding* 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Middlefield Community Center, 405 Main Street, Middlefield
  • October 9, 2021, Household Hazardous Waste 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Middlesex Community College, 100 Training Hill Road, Middletown

Acceptable Materials for Household Hazardous Waste:

  • Household: Cleaners, mothballs, photo chemicals, full/partially full aerosols, arts & crafts supplies, batteries (button or recyclable), mercury thermometers, fluorescent lightbulbs
  • Garage: hand-held propane torch cylinders, old chemistry kits, transmission fluid, gasoline, kerosene, waxes and polishes, brake fluid, rust preventatives
  • Workshop: wood preservatives, wood strippers, oil-based paint, latex paint, lead-based paint, paint thinner, degreasers, solvents, sealants
  • Yard/Garden: weed killer, insect sprays, rodent poison, muriatic acid/pool chemicals

Unacceptable materials for Household Hazardous Waste:

  • explosives, fireworks, ammunition – state police, local marinas
  • BBQ propane tanks – Blue Rhino participants
  • Fire Extinguishers – Shoreline Fire Extinguishers, Old Saybrook
  • Drugs – call Police for details

Additional Recycling Information

Consumer Electronics & Mattresses: These items can now be brought to each town’s transfer station or landfill, at no cost; materials will be recycled.

Latex & Oil-based Paints: Unwanted leftover latex or oil base paints can be brought to participating retail stores, participating transfer stations, or household hazardous waste collections. Go to paintcare.org for additional information.

Commercial HHW: Commercial hazardous waste accepted by appointment only (contact RiverCOG)

*Paper Shredding Events above: This is not for businesses; only for personal residential papers. Limit 5 bags or boxes (approximately 9″ H x 18″ W x 12″ D). No junk mail, magazines, books, cards, envelopes, metal ring-binders, etc. will be accepted at paper shredding events.
