(May 30, 2024) — There have been several instances of checks being stolen from the blue United States Postal Service drive-up mailbox in the Village Plaza on Killingworth Road in Higganum. The thieves “wash” the checks and write in a new payee and check amount.
There have been no reports of similar thefts from the blue mailbox at the Haddam Post Office on Saybrook Road. Ways to prevent your checks from being washed include switching to online bill payment and using gel pens to fill out checks.
