(June 14, 2024) — Anthropologist Margaret Mead was once asked what she thought was the greatest stride in human evolution. She said a healed fossil leg bone. In the Animal Kingdom, a broken leg means certain death. This person lived because somebody cared.
The Town of Killingworth and the Beechwood Community have joined together to provide seed funding for UR Community Cares. This program addresses the everyday needs of over-70 and disabled adults in our community so that they can stay in their homes.
Although the service is free, a $100 donation is required for a background check, insurance and driving history to ensure the safety of each participant. Residents who are financially able are urged to contribute to their own background check. Killingworth Civic organizations, churches and businesses will be asked to help fund the project.
The program has been adopted by more than twenty-seven Connecticut towns. Locally, it is supported by the Clinton Police Department.
Many of our aging and physically disabled residents need help with daily tasks. The UR Community Cares website automates donations and requests from recipients to volunteers. Volunteers are free to help as their time allows. There is no long-range commitment. Assistance is available in four categories:
Housework
Transportation
Yard Work
Companion
