Courant Writer Receives Award for Work on Crumbling Foundations
On Tuesday, the Hartford Courant’s Carolyn Lumsden was awarded the 2018 Pulliam editorial fellowship to research the crisis of crumbling foundations in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Lumsden will do a comparative case analysis with our neighbors in Canada to assess how they handled a similar issue involving concrete foundations containing pyrrhotite. I want to congratulate Carolyn on her award, and I look forward to reading her work on this devastating problem for local homeowners.
The crisis of crumbling foundations has impacted dozens of communities across central and northeastern Connecticut, and we need to leverage every possible resource on the state and federal level to address this problem. As a reminder, on Saturday, October 13 at 10:00 AM, the CT Coalition Against Crumbling Basements will be hosting a town hall meeting in the Ellington High School Auditorium with captive insurance superintendent Michael Maglaras. Mr. Maglaras will be presenting on the captive insurance process, eligibility, and underwriting guidelines – this insurance claims process is the beginning of getting dollars into the hands of homeowners to help offset the cost of repairs.

Economic Growth Continues to Surge Across Eastern Connecticut
Last weekend, the Connecticut Department of Labor released 2017 Connecticut Town Economic Indexes which showed that several local towns are among the fastest growing in the state. As economic growth is surging across southeastern Connecticut, that is good news for our entire region and state. As ranking member of the Seapower subcommittee, I have fought hard to increase federal support for shipbuilding at EB which in turn has helped fuel economic growth and hiring across our region. The momentum continues to grow as businesses of all shapes and sizes are populating and developing within our district. Eastern Connecticut’s diverse business climate will continue to bring more investment and new residents into the region.
