Swing Bridge Construction Update, Week of October 23, 2023

Submitted by Sara Mendillo

(October 23, 2023) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation advises the following construction activities at the Haddam East Haddam Swing Bridge for the upcoming week of October 23, 2023:

63-Hour Bridge Closure:  No 63-hour bridge closure this week. (Next 63-hour bridge closure is scheduled for November 5-8, 2023)

There will be full overnight bridge closures as follows:

  • Monday (10/23) night into Tuesday (10/24) morning – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday (10/24) night into Wednesday (10/25) morning – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday (10/25) night into Thursday (10/26) morning – 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The Swing Bridge openings for tall marine vessels are scheduled as following:

  • Monday through Thursday at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday through Sunday at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.

Be advised that on days with high winds, there may be times when the swing span cannot safely open to boaters; when wind gusts are 35 mph or higher, swing span openings will be canceled. Mariners intending to pass through the bridge are encouraged to monitor the wind forecast on their navigation day. Boaters are advised that the swing span is still in a state of disrepair; if, during an opening, something occurs that could potentially put the bridge at risk, all openings will be cancelled until further notice.
