Submitted by Sara Mendillo

(November 24, 2024) — The Connecticut Department of Transportation advises the following construction activities at the Haddam/East Haddam Swing Bridge (Route 82) for the upcoming week of November 24, 2024:

Overnight Bridge Closures

Motorists are advised that the contractor will NOT be performing overnight bridge closures this week because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The next overnight bridge closures are scheduled for:

– Monday night (12/2/24) into Tuesday morning (12/3/24) – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
– Tuesday night (12/3/24) into Wednesday morning (12/4/24) – 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Any changes to this schedule will be communicated in a timely manner.

  • Motorists are advised that the contractor will NOT be working on Thursday, November 28, 2024, or on Friday, November 29, 2024. Work activities will resume on Monday, December 2, 2024

Lane Closures

  • Single lane closures on Route 82 will occur Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. within the project limits. Traffic flaggers will coordinate the alternating traffic sequence.
  • Both lanes will be reopened and operational during peak traffic hours.

Marine Advisory

Boaters are advised that during the month of November 2024, bridge openings for tall recreational vessels occur daily at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The bridge will no longer open for tall recreational vessels starting on December 1, 2024. Openings will resume on February 15, 2025.

Please note that on days when wind gusts are 25 mph or higher, swing span openings will be cancelled. Mariners intending to pass through the bridge are encouraged to monitor the wind forecast on their navigation day and call the bridge operator.

Mariners are advised that the contractor’s suspended scaffold, previously removed to provide additional clearance for vessels, has been reinstalled.

The tide clearance board is recommended as the best reference for gauging clearance at time of passage. The board is located on the bulkhead at Goodspeed, and has been set to indicate the vertical clearance to the contractor’s suspended scaffold.

The bridge operator can be reached at 860-218-4973. Please be advised that this phone number is designated for marine use only.
