SMC: Swimming & Diving Teams Grab 11 Wins in Season Opener against Keene State

The Saint Michael’s College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams combined to win 11 events during their season-opening losses to Keene State College on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018. The men fell 158-130 while the women lost 184-103.

For the men, first-year Nate Imbergamo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) gathered wins in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.83), 500-yard freestyle (5:21.09), and 1,000 free (10:53.15) while partnering with senior Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), junior Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham), and sophomore Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) for a victory in the 200 free relay (1:32.70). Stewart won a career-high three times, adding individual wins in the 100 free (51.71) and 200 free (1:55.71). Hopkins finished the meet with two wins, adding a victory in the 50 free (22.43) to go along with the 200 free relay win. He also finished second in the 100 back (55.72), losing by just 0.16 seconds. Hopkins joined junior Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), sophomore Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and first-year Sean McGurn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) to finish second in the 400-yard medley relay. McGurn was runner-up in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races, while Mulderrig took second in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. Seniors Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) and first-years Myron Prograis (Etters, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and William Sullivan (Arlington, Va./Bishop O’Connell) finished second in the 200 free relay. Butler finished 0.17 seconds off of second place in the 100 free while senior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) finished 2.45 points outside of second place during the first one-meter diving event.

On the women’s side, senior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) led the Purple Knights with wins in the 500 free (5:29.40) and 1,000 free (11:16.68) while joining senior Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) and juniors Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) for a win in the 400 medley relay (4:19.09). The quartet also added a second-place finish in the 200 free relay. Giampietro triumphed in the 200 breast (2:38.45) and finished second in the 100 breast. White finished second in the 200 free while sophomore Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) grabbed a second-place finish in the 100 back and was 0.63 seconds short of senior Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) for second in the 200 back. Sophomore Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) added a second-place finish in the 200 IM while Grimaldi and senior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) finished 0.09 and 0.35 seconds behind the second-place finisher in the 50 free, respectively.
