The Saint Michael’s College women’s swimming & diving team lost to Merrimack College, 121-84, in a dual meet on Friday, before both the men’s and women’s teams were swept by Clarkson University on Saturday. The men fell 148-74, while the women lost a close 119-103 contest. The women’s team falls to 1-3, while the men are now 1-2.
In the women’s meet against Merrimack, senior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) grabbed three wins, coming up victorious in the 500- (5:25.42) and 1000-yard (11:18.44) freestyle races, while combining with juniors Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) and sophomore Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford) for a win in the 400-yard medley relay (4:19.58). Giampietro also captured wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.87) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.93). White added a triumph in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.12) and placed third in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) earned a third-place showing in the 50 free and contributed to a third-place finish in the 200 free relay with classmates Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) and sophomore Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin).
During the Clarkson meet, Kohn added two more wins and in doing so passed the 75-win plateau for her career, finishing the day with 76. She claimed the 200-meter backstroke (2:30.13) and 800-meter freestyle (9:54.09), and added a second-place finish in the 400-meter medley relay with Giampietro, Grimaldi, and White. Grimaldi grabbed the win in the 50 free (30.29) and partnered with Benoit, Flanagan, and White for a win in the 200 free relay (2:01.96). Giampietro added a win in the 400-meter individual medley (5:34.53) and finished as the runner-up in the 200-meter breaststroke. White finished second in the 200-meter butterfly, while junior Reiley Adelson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) claimed second in the 200 free. First-year Maggie King (Clinton, Conn./Mercy) placed second in the one-meter diving contest.
On the men’s side, first-years Nate Imbergamo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and Sean McGurn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) grabbed the Purple Knights’ only victories, with the former winning the 800 free (9:18.34) and the latter claiming the 200 breast (2:39.04). Imbergamo finished second in the 200 back, while McGurn was the runner-up in the 400 free and combined with juniors Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) and Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and sophomore Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) for second in the 400 medley relay. Mulderrig captured second in both the 200 fly and 400 IM, while Hopkins took second in the 50 free. Hopkins also anchored the second-place 200 free relay team, where he joined senior Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), sophomore Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene), and first-year William Sullivan (Arlington, Va./Bishop O’Connell). Stewart also finished runner-up in both the 100 free and 200 free events.
