According to multiple news outlets, last night, June 22, 2019, at approximately 7:10 p.m., DEEP Police were called to Hammonassett State Park in Madison upon getting reports of a motor vehicle accident. A single SUV had rolled over between the rotary and the ticket booth in the outbound lane. Six people were in the vehicle; two were ejected during the crash, police said. Nicholas Proto, age 18, of Haddam, who just graduated from HKHS on June 11, was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The driver and three of the passengers were transported to area hospitals. The park was closed on Saturday night as crews investigated and reopened this morning. The investigation is ongoing.
