Ribbon Cutting Event Marks Opening of HES Playscape

By Susan Fagan

(September 17, 2024) — On September 14, 2024, people gathered at the former Haddam Elementary School for the official opening of their new playscape. The community-inspired project was funded by a grant from the State of Connecticut and brought to fruition by the efforts of town leaders and citizens.

The playscape is aesthetically pleasing with its brightly colored towers and slides intended for children of preschool and elementary school age to enjoy. There are two sections, the Twin Flyer is for toddler size kids, while the Fish Tower is for the older ones. According to one third grader, the slide at the Fish Tower is “so great and really, really, high,” while a second grader was impressed by its size and beautiful blue color.

Adding to the festivities, vendors lined up at the entrance to the site.  Becca’s Buddies, a new business in town, displayed beautifully crafted crochet animals, while Bogue Farm had a wonderful selection of fresh apples, pumpkins and vegetables. Fresh bread, breakfast sandwiches and soft drinks were also on hand.

The playscape project is a step forward in revitalizing Higganum Center and provides an opportunity for citizens of Higganum and Haddam to showcase a new aspect in town to visiting family and friends.
