Outdoor Track 2021: HKHS Remains Undefeated as they Defeat Valley

On Tuesday, May 4, 2021, the Haddam Killingworth High School boys and girls track teams stayed undefeated in their dual meet season as they competed in a home meet at the Dick Dupuis Track against Valley Regional HS.

Both the boys and girls team came away with victories on the day as the boys defeated Valley by a score of 132-13 to improve their record to 3-0 on the season.  Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Eamon Sweeney 110 hurdles (15.1) 300 hurdles (42.1) and high jump (5’6″), Matthew Jennings 800 (1:56.8), John Bruder shot put (51’11”) and discus (128’8″), Jonathon Chute pole vault (9’0″), Evan Baird 3200 (10:54), Caleb Freeman 1600 (4:49), Julian Houde 400 (62.2),  John Kowal 200 (24.0), Aidan Law long jump (18’7″), John Bosco javelin (141’3″).  The boys 4×800 (Alex Lara, Evan Baird, Ethan Chester, Matthew Jennings) and 4×400 (Max Cozean, Caleb Freeman, Alex Lara, Matthew Jennings) relays were also victorious on the day helping the team score valuable points. A highlight of the meet was Matthew Jennings breaking the school record in the 800 with a time of 1:56.8 which breaks the previous record held by Jake Corbett of 1:58.46 in 2006.

The H-K Girls team also improved their record to 3-0 as they beat Valley by a score of 119-31. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Mai-Ly Criscuolo won the 100 hurdles (17.7) and 300 hurdles (51.2), Kedarjah Lewis 100 (12.5) the 200 (26.8) long jump (17’5″) and triple jump (33’3″), Izzy Berardino 1600 (5:41) and 3200 (12:42), Leah Chester high jump (4’6″), Mikaya Laurenza shot put (26’9″), Gabby Lester discus (88’4″), Scarlett Strom javelin (77’9″), Morgan Schultz pole vault (7’6″), Brianna Minervino 800 (2:42). The girls 4×800 (Kathy Melgar, Gabby Flaherty, Charlotte Selmer, Meara Bodak) and 4×400 (Brianna Minervino, Leah Chester, Nina Lamb, Mai-Ly Criscuolo) relays were also victorious on the afternoon to propel the girls to their victory.

 

The track teams will next be in action on Saturday May 8, 2021 as they travel to Danbury to compete in the CT Classic Invitational and then against next Tuesday May 11, 2021 for a home meet against East Hampton.
