Music, Memories, Food and Fun from the 2024 Haddam Neck Fair!

By Susan Fagan

(September 5, 2024) — The 112th Annual Haddam Neck Fair returned this past Labor Day weekend, filling the air with the vibrant sounds of laughter, music, trucks and tractors and the aroma of classic fair foods. The Fair has been a community tradition since 1911 and the spirit on which it was founded is still prevalent today. That is, the spirit of family, fun, and friendly competitions.

Vendors lined the fairground, displaying and selling their creations. The air was filled with the scent of mesquite, fresh popcorn, and sugary sweetness.  If savory barbecue is what you were looking for, you could find it at House of BBQ & Bacon. Their candied bacon and pork burnt ends were a succulent treat. Craving something sweet?  How about a delicious piece of apple pie made by the Haddam Neck Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, or one of the many treats at Memaw’s Bakery Barn!  Looking for a unique gift? We found some at the 3D printing company, Maturity HalfWay, where we saw an interesting display of colorful and artistically designed toys.

In addition to all the wonderful food, several fun rides were presented by Marena Amusements, providing plenty of enjoyment for the kids, judging by their smiles and laughter. A petting zoo, educational presentations, working oxen and cattle and a variety of shows and friendly competitions continued throughout the weekend. Shows such as the Kids Power Wheels Derby, Dancing with Hoops and Bubble Show, and the Truck and Tractor Pull, Dog Agility and 5K Road Race competitions were all very entertaining and well-received.

And let’s not forget about the live music! Seven Wonders Band was featured on Saturday evening and Max Creek, still creakin’ after more than thirty years of performances, brought their Grateful Dead-inspired music to the stage on Sunday night.

The festivities are over for now. The music and games have all been played and the vendors have closed their booths. The names and faces of this community event change over the years, but the spirit upon which the fair was built, remains. See you next year!
