(Middletown, CT.) Chairman Tom Byrne of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce announced that since it’s inception on May 28, 2019, the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Recovery Employment Program (REP) has made significant strides to put individuals who have suffered from opioid addictions, as well as other addictions back to work.
While working hard in establishing REP, the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce has had great success with the program and continues to grow its achievements by helping those in recovery establish employment.
Upon the creation of the program, the Chamber hired REP Outreach Coordinator, Charles Mitchell who serves as the liaison between the employer and employee, and Business Coordinator, Harry Burr who recruits businesses to participate. Both are working hard to put individuals back to work through the program, while assisting them with navigating the tough road of recovery.
The majority of clients have struggled to find work due to their long bouts with addiction and likely criminal background. Despite this, many businesses that hire clients from the program believe that everyone deserves a second chance and are proud of the work ethic these individuals have shown through their work and recovery journey.
Administrative Director of Bishop’s Auto Parts, Inc. Cindi Haire noted, “Nobody can claim perfection and we do not believe a person’s past definitively defines who they are. Our philosophy that a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the desire to learn and grow are the basic qualities necessary to develop someone into becoming a successful member of our team. We have found that Charles Mitchell and the Middlesex Chamber share this ideology. Our partnership with them has, and will continue to be, a positive benefit for all involved.”
Chief Operating Officer of Perma Treat Corporation Donald Ponko noted, “I just realized one of our REP clients has passed 18 moths as part of the Perma Treat family! I can’t thank the Middlesex Chamber and their Recovery Employment Program enough for bringing such a great hire to us. They have been terrific and we’re coming back for more new hires.”
Chamber President Larry McHugh noted, “I am very proud of the success of the REP program. A big thanks to DMHAS Commissioner, Mariam Delphin-Rittmon and Director of Prevention and Services of DMHAS Carol Meredith for their support! Another thanks goes to Charles Mitchell, Harry Burr and those businesses hiring individuals as they battle their addiction. We are making a positive difference.”
