By Kathy Brown.
In this series, we will introduce you to all eleven members of the Regional School District #17’s Board of Education for 2017-18.
In November 2017, Kathleen Zandi was elected by the voters of Killingworth as a Democratic candidate.
Kathy and her husband settled in Killingworth in 1999 based on “location, rural character, and quality of the schools,” Kathy said. Kathy grew up in New Hampshire, and obtained her Bachelors degree in Chemistry at the University of New Hampshire. She went on to obtain her PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of California Irvine, then a post-doctoral fellowship at Colorado State. Since then, she has been working at Pfizer. She is currently a Pharmaceutical Sciences Team Leader, where she leads teams who manufacture new medicines. She worked on Bosulif, Vizimpro and Talzenna, which have been recently approved to treat leukemia, lung cancer, and breast cancer.
She ran for the position on the Board of Education “to make a difference in children’s education,” Kathy said. “Education=independence, education=freedom, education=confidence, education=power. Education is the grand equalizer. Each child should be offered that opportunity.”
Kathy is currently the Chairman of the Curriculum Subcommittee, and also is a Board liaison for the Curriculum Council.
In her free time, Kathy is involved with Killingworth Girl Scout Troop 60779, which her daughter, in ninth grade, is involved in, as well as Killingworth Boy Scout Troop 18, of which her son, an Eagle Scout and a senior, is a member. Both of Kathy’s children attend Haddam Killingworth High School. She also enjoys the outdoors.
