Major Brush Fire Causes Disruption and Power Outages in Haddam

(November 18, 2024) — At 4:25 p.m. on November 16, 2024, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a reported brush fire on Saybrook Road, across from River Road, in Haddam.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed an approximately one-acre brush fire was present along the southwest side of Saybrook Road and spreading rapidly. The fire started from downed power lines.

Additional crews from Chester Hose Company, East Haddam Fire Department and Middletown South District, and DEEP provided mutual aid at the scene. Durham Volunteer Fire Company provided station coverage.

Crews accessed the fire from logging roads and contained the fire within an hour.

Saybrook Road traffic was closed during the incident and rerouted down River Road and Rutty Ferry Road.

One firefighter was injured at the incident, transported to Middlesex Hospital, treated and released.

Middlesex County remains at an “extreme” forest fire danger level. An emergency burn ban is in effect throughout the state.
