It was wonderful to open the H-K News this week and to learn about our local
candidates, the experience they would bring to elected office, and what
issues they believe are important to the voters. “Hearing” the candidates “in
their own words” provided a view into who they are, and what they would
bring to elected office. As a voter, I am often curious about the unique
qualities and experience of the candidates who run for high office in our
state.
To represent a local district, or to serve as a state senator in our complex
world, demands a wide range of experience and, ostensibly, a comprehensive
understanding of the diverse problems facing Connecticut today. Coupled with that
understanding, one would also expect that a qualified candidate for public
office would also have the expertise to effectively remediate those problems.
Globally, we are facing the consequences of extreme weather conditions that
have grave impact on the environment, our health and safety, and our state
and local economies. Other urgent issues include management of the
pandemic, an epidemic of gun violence, increased rates of suicide, adult and
child mental health concerns, the needs of an aging population, housing,
infrastructure, inflation and economic instability, and issues related to social
justice and human rights, including women’s reproductive freedom.
As a voter, it is important to me that our public officials are competent and
knowledgeable, and demonstrate proven experience to address these issues.
There appears to be a significant contrast in the experience of the local
candidates seeking state office, and this begs attention. Is it not reasonable
to expect that candidates for state office are qualified for the job? As a voter,
I plan to express my outrage by voting for the incumbent candidates with a
proven record!!!
