Letter to the Editor: Open Letter to Congressman Courtney

The views stated here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the editors of this newspaper.

Mr. Courtney:
The only people who need protection are those elderly in congregate settings.  Encourage others over 65 to protect themselves by staying out of crowded situations and wearing masks when they go into public.
We do not need more government spending.  This will further destroy the economy and create dependence on programs.

What is critical is that government allow people to go about their normal business and stop interfering.

  1. Through May 23rd, 15,726 Americans UNDER the age of 65 have died of Covid-19, according to the CDC website.(https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Sex-Age-and-S/9bhg-hcku.If) over 15,000 Americans under 65 have died so far, that means somewhere over 150,000 people in that age group have contracted the virus–probably closer to 200,000. Some of those people will have significant long term problems from the virus. While it is true that those over 65, especially those grouped in assisted living like facilities, are at much higher risk and do constitute the majority of deaths from the virus, those under 65 certainly need some protection as well and are far from risk free. Personally, I know 20 people who have or have had the virus; 4 of them have died–all from Windsor Locks–my hometown. Two of those people were under 65. Of the other 16, 14 are under 65, including 3 former students of mine at HKHS.
