The significance of an effective Planning & Zoning Commission in a small town like ours cannot be underestimated. P&Z plays a pivotal role in shaping the very essence of our community, ensuring that growth and development occur in a controlled, sustainable, and harmonious manner. Haddam is blessed with unique cultural and architectural legacies, as well as magnificent natural resources. A well-conceived Planning & Zoning Commission helps preserve these distinctive identities by setting design standards and creating regulations, while ensuring consistency as we work toward responsible growth. This planning, in turn, safeguards the historical, aesthetic, and cultural value that draws residents and visitors alike.
In the past few years, these safeguards have been threatened. Our current P&Z Commission has carelessly allowed “spot zoning” in Higganum Center, failed to proactively plan for our future, which resulted in two Dollar Generals moving in, and most recently we witnessed another “spot zoning” attempt that nearly passed for a zone change from residential to commercial in an area that is in the Haddam Center National Register Historic District. Two of the members seeking re-election voted “Yes” to this and the third member seeking re-election was the applicant for the zone change. All of this, while canceling 62% of their meetings this year alone. Why would we re-elect three members who played a role in these missteps and have proven time and time again that they don’t serve our interests?
It’s time to elect Commission members who will fight for preservation, responsible growth, and development, and have a vision to contribute to the long-term prosperity and well-being of this community; Commission members who will work toward attracting family-friendly small businesses, not big box retail; Commission members who prohibit businesses that sell illegal drugs to our children; and Commission members who will listen and have empathy toward everyone in the community, not just a select few.
While Haddam may face unique challenges, the importance of an effective Planning & Zoning Commission remains steadfast. Between development at Scovil, interest from developers at Rossi, HES and Tylerville, this is a pivotal time for Planning & Zoning. I’m committed to rolling up my sleeves and taking this responsibility seriously. We can’t afford not to. Please vote Mike Karam for Planning & Zoning on November 7th.
Thank you,
Mike Karam
